The Nevillebrücke (Neville Bridge) in Vienna is currently used as a pedestrian and cycling link as well as a small neighborhood meeting place. Our design proposal enhances this everyday space with shade, seating, and clear spatial zoning. Oval pergolas support shallow-rooted trees and bring natural cooling to the bridge. Raised planters and small platforms form places to pause, meet, and watch the sunset over the Wien River.

Built in the mid-19th century as one of Vienna’s first iron bridge constructions, the Neville Bridge has been rebuilt several times and later became part of the Wien River vault above today’s U4 line. Once used by tram line 6 and car traffic, it has been reserved for pedestrians and cyclists since 2012.
Today, the bridge is an everyday shortcut and a small recreational spot for the neighborhood. While well used, it lacks shade and comfortable areas to spend time — a need that shaped our competition proposal.

The historic structure offers little soil depth for planting. To support tree growth regardless, we propose oval shading pergolas with central openings. These strengthen shallow-rooted trees while bringing natural shade to the deck. Seating is integrated into existing planters and complemented by slightly elevated platforms that create small gathering areas between the planted zones.
The design encourages casual encounters and turns the bridge into a place to linger, not only to cross. It forms intimate public spaces for resting, sharing views, and enjoying the daily sunset over the Wien River.
