Thanks to its excellent public transport connections, Pier 22 serves as a lively hub for the Danube island and an important leisure area for the entire city. The Pier 22 program focuses on a new quality of public space: free offers, robust yet high-quality materials and a variety of possible uses.

The first construction phase is spatially and functionally divided into the waterfront promenade, the Park-Working area and (in the future) the Kulturkiosk.
In the next construction phase, which starts in September 2024, additional landscapes will be designed: a picnic garden unfolding along the slope, a newly built café with sunlit terraces, and the Future Fitness Zone, which will provide a range of athletes with sport facilities in the immediate vicinity to the cool waters of the Danube. In this way, the role of the Danube Island as a public leisure space with various uses is being further expanded.

An extensive swimming area with a long waterfront promenade invites you to stroll. The focus of this first construction phase lies on an improved access to the water. Seating steps lead down to a flat area for children to play, large wooden platforms made of larch provide the perfect area for sunbathing, and a round platform appears to float above the water and opens up another, exciting space. Greened islands and nets hanging over the water provide additional possibilities for seating, resting and playing. To round off the swimming experience, public showers were installed.

wooden platforms on the green slopes

All elements of Pier 22 are united by their friendly and open design, which invites users. The same goes for the wooden platforms on the slope. With their colorful accents, they are scattered on the slope like confetti and enliven the steep terrain. Whether as an obstacle course, as fitness furniture, as a place for group gatherings or as a retreat for relaxed reading – a variety of uses could be observed in the first few days after the opening.
The platforms offer views of the new Pier 22, the natural green of the river banks and even the Vienna skyline. An ideal spot to overlook and enjoy the lively summer activities on the waterfront!

The planting, including year-round grasses and native perennials, connects the place with its natural origin, the floodplain landscape. Greening the banks and planting new trees creates shading elements and promotes biodiversity.

Park-Working at Pier 22

Adapted to the needs of the mobile age, the Park-Working area offers unusual opportunities for working in the city. Various seating options with desks for individuals and groups enable comfortable open air working – spontaneously and free of charge. The Park-Working area features curved balconies that float above the promenade and look out over the shimmering water. It is designed with smooth furniture in soft pastel tones. Pergolas with wooden slats provide shade during the day and light at night, while public Wi-Fi connects digital nomads to the Internet. With lockers planned for the next phase of construction, Pier 22 will be a viable alternative to overheated interiors.

The planned Kulturkiosk will provide a platform for artists and cultural happenings. Visitors can look forward to offers such as open-air cinema or readings. The affiliated public toilets are already open and ready to use.
